Nancy Hamel (Nhi) est une photographe et artiste originaire de Drummondville, désormais établie à Montréal. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme à The School of Dance à Ottawa en 1999, elle a entamé une carrière polyvalente dans le domaine de la danse, en tant qu'interprète, chorégraphe et enseignante. En 2019, de retour à Montréal après un long séjour à Boston, Nancy a entrepris un changement de carrière en revenant aux études pour se spécialiser dans la photographie au Collège Marsan. Elle obtient le prix M5 pour le meilleur portfolio de sa cohorte en 2021. Après l'obtention de son diplôme, Nancy a inauguré une exposition solo à la galerie Axart en juillet 2021, mettant en lumière sa série "Natatorium", explorant son affection pour l'eau en relation avec son hypersensibilité. Elle a également participé à un collectif intitulé "Water Essential", sélectionné par le jury de Wendi Schneider, à la galerie Photo Place (Vermont, 2021). En novembre 2021, elle a présenté sa série "Biophilia", explorant l'importance de renouer avec notre amour profondément ancré pour la nature, lors d'une exposition collective organisée au Collège Marsan (Montréal) en collaboration avec le Musée McCord (Montréal).
En 2022, elle démarre l'année en intégrant le collectif multidisciplinaire "Parcours exploratoires" à la galerie Axart, avec une projection liée à sa série "Biophilia" (janvier 2022). En avril de la même année, elle est nommée aux 8e FAPA - Fine Art Photography Awards et reçoit deux mentions honorables aux Minimalist Photography Awards ainsi qu'au concours PX3 pour son œuvre "Inner World". En 2023, elle présente une exposition intitulée "Radicelles" à la galerie Axart (septembre 2023), poursuivant ainsi son exploration de l'importance de renouer avec la nature. En novembre de la même année, elle participe à une exposition collective à New York, à la Fondation Angel Orensanz, en tant que lauréate de l'American Photography.
Le travail de Nancy est profondément influencé par son parcours en danse, guidant son approche intuitive de la photographie. Sa sensibilité à l'environnement, au jeu de la lumière et à sa résonance avec le sujet façonne son processus créatif. Elle explore la mémoire, l'identité et notre relation au monde vivant, en s'attachant particulièrement aux thèmes de la métamorphose et de la résilience. Animée par le désir d'expérimenter, elle joue avec différentes matières pour créer des effets qui confèrent à ses images une qualité picturale.
Son esthétique minimaliste dévoile un univers doux et coloré, où portraits, paysages et compositions abstraites s'entrelacent dans une danse visuelle poétique.

Nancy Hamel (Nhi) is a fine art photographer and artist based in Montreal. After graduating from the The School of Dance in Ottawa in 1999, she pursued a career in dance wearing many hats: performer, choreographer, teacher, and set designer. In 2019, upon returning to Montreal after a long stay in Boston, Nancy decided on a career change, she returned to school to study photography at College Marsan. She obtained the M5 award for the best portfolio of her cohort in 2021. After graduating, she had a solo exhibition at the Axart Gallery (July 2021) with her Natatorium series, which explores her love for water in relation to her hypersensitivity. She participated in a collective titled Water Essential, juror Wendi Schneider at Photo Place Gallery (Vermont, 2021). In November 2021, she presented her series Biophilia, which explores the importance of reconnecting with our deeply rooted love for nature, in a group exhibit at College Marsan (Montreal) in collaboration with the McCord Museum (Montreal)
In 2022, she began the year by participating in the multidisciplinary collective Parcours exploratoires at the Axart gallery with a short projection relating to her Biophilia series (January 2022). In April 2022, she received a nomination from the 8th annual FAPA - Fine Art Photography Awards and two Honorable mentions from Minimalist Photography Awards and for PX3 contest for her work Inner World. In 2023, she had a solo exhibit called Radicelles at the Axart Gallery (September 2023) which is a continuity of exploring the importance of reconnecting with nature. In November 2023, she participated in a group exhibition in New York at the Angel Orensanz Foundation as part of a winner of the American Photography 39.
Nancy’s work is deeply influenced by her dance background, guiding her intuitive approach to photography. Sensitivity to the environment, the play of light, and its resonance with the subject shape her creative process. She explores memory, identity, and our relationship with the living world, particularly through themes of metamorphosis and resilience. She loves to explore and create with different materials, seeking effects that infuse her images with a painterly quality. Her minimalist aesthetic captures a soft, colorful world where portraits, landscapes, and abstract compositions intertwine in a poetic visual dance.
